Sam's Throne:
The Sam's Throne Area is by far the best climbing area in Arkansas with excellent rock and endless routes, its a climber's paradise.
I will give route info and directions to the Main Sam's Throne area in this section. These areas will include Sam's Throne, the East and West Main Bluff's, Cave Creek, and the Outback.

Directions:Here's your directions. DON'T COME TO SAM'S WITHOUT THE GUIDEBOOK!!! or someone who has been here of course. It is so far out in the middle of nowhere without the guidebook you might as well forget it.
Clay Frisbee put out a climbing guide on Sam's Thone by the Chockstone Press "Sam's Throne Area #22." It will probably be in every outdoor shop within a couple a hundred miles. Get it.

Directions to the Sam's Throne, Outback, East and West Main Bluff:
First, get the guidebook. Have I stressed that enough? Then from Mt. Judea take Hwy 123 South for about 3.5 miles, thats give or take really. Usually there is a rock cairn marking the pulloff to the parking area, which will be on your right. There is a pretty open area where the turnoff is and watch for the big mudpuddles. Park in the area just off Hwy 123. To access the Sam's Thone, East and West main bluffs you can turn to the left once you have found the entrance. There will be a lot of campsites down towards the bluff line. This is a very rugged road! I wouldn't bring the stationwagon! The outback can be accessed by going to the right and finding an immediate parking place. There are several walkdowns on the west main bluff side (see guidebook.)
Sam's Climate:
Like most of Arkansas, It is extremely hot and humid during the summer. The best times to climb are Spring and Fall. Winter can occasionally find temperatures in the 60's making for very enjoyable climbing. I actually spent the New Year's Day 2000 at Mount Magazine climbing. Harrison is about 30 miles north of Sam's, but will give you a good idea of the local weather. Click the picture to get a forecast.
